New kind of Gym

Matthew Pilkington, red T-shirt askew, is breathing hard. His cheeks are flushed, and sweat trickles through his hair and onto his glasses.
He couldn't be enjoying himself more.
He slashes a saber through the air to smack randomly flashing lights on three pillars. Later, he wiggles back and forth on a snowboard to guide it down a virtual hill without wiping out in a snowdrift.
"You can have fun here," the 13-year-old Peoria boy says, en route to a five-level spider-web climbing tower. "They have the air-conditioning on, and you can just run around."
Matthew is "exergaming" at the XRKade, an innovative gym in the Glendale/Peoria/Deer Valley YMCA's Put Play in Your Day Center.
The Glendale XRKade, the first in Arizona and the third of six in operation nationwide, is at the forefront of a growing movement to encourage physical activity in tweens and teens - without making it seem like punishment.
